To Hirtshals Denmark!

We did not spend alot of time in Germany, we decided to cross it quickly as we can always go to Germany again if we want to.

Day 1

Our adventure began in Zurich, where I crashed at Mike's place the night before. We woke up early, with all our stuff packed and our excitement building for our trip during the pandemic. We both got the COVID vaccine, which made traveling easier (less hassle at borders and quarantine).

After a simple breakfast, we geared up and walked to the garage nearby to get on our bikes. We quickly checked our communication gear and made sure everything was tied down on our motorcycles. Then, we hit the road for our first destination: Holiday Centre Albert Schweizer in Germany, which was about 600 kilometers away.

We rolled into our destination pretty late, and it turned out there was a big biker meetup happening. Lots of folks with classic bikes were on a camping adventure with ride-outs planned. They also gave us a heads up about some heavy rain expected during the night, complete with thunder.

With that rainy forecast in mind, we decided to use our tarp to cover our bikes before calling it a night. We wanted to make sure our trusty rides wouldn't be soaking wet in the morning.

Around 5 am, both of us jolted awake at the same time. We heard this strange noise, like something had fallen and broken. In a flash, we were out in the rain, clad only in our underwear because, lo and behold, Mike's bike had tipped over! It narrowly missed crashing into my T7, but sadly, Mike's windshield took the hit when it met the crash guards of my T7.

We figured out what went wrong soon after. When we'd secured the tarp over our bikes, it created a sort of pocket where rainwater collected. The water couldn't flow anywhere until it became too heavy for the bike, causing it to tip. Lesson learned: always make sure water can drain away properly.

Thankfully, nothing major was damaged. After an unplanned, cold shower that woke us up real fast, we decided to hop back into our sleeping bags and wait out the rain, since it was supposed to stop soon. 🌧️💦😅

To be honest, we spent a lot of time on the highways during this part of the trip. And let me tell you, I really don't like highways. They're just so dull, and strangely, I feel more unsafe on them compared to off-road riding. But I guess highways do get you to your destination faster, so there's that. Not much exciting happened on the highways, and we didn't take many breaks for pictures because we wanted to save storage space for our Iceland adventure. So, there isn't a ton of footage from this part of the journey, but trust me, the best is yet to come! 🏍️💨

Day 2

After that crazy wake-up call and as soon as the rain stopped, we started packing our stuff and let our tents catch some rays to dry before rolling them back into their bags. We said our goodbyes and hit the road towards our next stop, not far from Kiel, which was basically on the doorstep of Denmark!

The ride itself wasn't mind-blowing, but the weather was perfect, and the sun kept us company until the evening when we set up camp. We were in a hurry to leave Germany because they had these rapid tests for everyone, whether you were vaxxed or not, and those tests were only good for about a day.

We drove into one of these testing centers, and it was pretty quirky—a drive-through setup, super efficient. We got our results via text within like 15 minutes. That gave us the green light to stay one more night and enter the campsite, but we could only chill on the restaurant's balcony, not inside, because we only done the speed test not the PCR (but we did a PCR just before leaving Switzerland which was supposed to last 48h but only in Switzerland. It was kinda funny, to be honest.

We grabbed a quick bite anyway at the restaurant and decided to call it a night as darkness fell. The long rides were starting to wear me out, and some quality sleep was much-needed. 😴🌄

Day 3

Another night of limited sleep behind us, we rose fairly early. After a quick shower and a light breakfast, we hit the road, aiming for the Danish border. Our destination: Hirtshals, where we had booked an Airbnb to give everything a chance to dry out before catching the morning ferry to Iceland! The weather was overcast with intermittent rain throughout most of the day. ☁️🌧️ But hey we made in in time and are really excited about the ferry ride!
